The Open category for men and women in the Western Australian Basketball League (WABL) is commonly and coequally known as Division 1 or D-League. Traditionally, teams at this level are made up of bench players and extended squad members of State Basketball League (SBL) teams, now NBL1 West.
The competition was known as WABL Division 1 from as early as the mid 1990s until 2008. After a year known as WABL Open Men and Women in 2009, the competition was known as WABL D-League from 2010 to 2016.
In 2017, with the inclusion of Geraldton Buccaneers and Goldfields Giants in the men’s competition, the name SBL Division 1 was introduced while still under the WABL banner. A Goldfields Giants women’s team was entered for the first time in 2018.
In 2020, following the cancellation of the SBL season, the “SBL Division 1” name was dropped and “D-League” was reintroduced as a placeholder name in a COVID-affected year.
In 2021, the league looked to align a ‘Championship’ brand from Under 12s to Open Age. As such, the competition was branded as WABL Championship Men and Women. More can be read on this here.
