The Competition

“The Western Australian Basketball League aims to provide a state-wide premier junior competition which develops players, coaches and officials. The League seeks to meet the high level competition requirements through accessible education and training, while promoting positive mental, physical and emotional outcomes.”

The Western Australian Basketball League (WABL) is WA’s premier junior basketball competition catering for players in the following age groups: U12, U14, U16, U18, U20 and Open Age (Division 1/D-League).

In 2014, the League introduced pre-season grading, which sees divisions graded depending on ability. Every year, Under 12s to Under 18s are graded at the WABL Grading Tournament, which takes place annually in late February and early March.

The season generally commences in late April and finishing with finals in September. Round 1 of the 2023 season is scheduled for Sunday 23 April.

Regular season games are played on Sundays over an 18-week home and away season where every team plays each other twice (where possible), plus three weeks of finals.

There are currently 13 WABL Associations, with games played across 15 venues. Eleven of the 13 Associations are based in the Perth Metropolitan area, from Joondalup in the north to Rockingham in the south, and Perry Lakes in the west to Hills Raiders in the east. The remaining two associations are based in regional Western Australia, including Bunbury (South West region) and Mandurah (Peel region). See our Associations in depth here.
