The 2024 WABL Championship Women’s season concluded yesterday with the Perry Lakes Hawks defeating the Mandurah Magic in the Grand Final to claim their third straight title.
In a low scoring affair, the Magic led the way in the first half behind centre Hannah Chatfield, taking a 32–22 lead into the main break. A tight third quarter ensued, which was followed by the Hawks mounting a ferocious comeback in the fourth quarter. The Magic had been in control for the majority match, only conceding the lead to the Hawks in the dying seconds when forward Ellie Newman hit two free throws. The Hawks finished with a 17–7 final quarter and ran out winners 49–47.
Chatfield finished with a game-high 15 points while guard Tiana Palmer provided solid support for the Magic with 12 points. For the Hawks, Newman finished with 12 points while forward Eryn Fisher had 11 points. Jordi Perry from the Hawks was named Grand Final MVP for her poise at the guard position, as she finished with 11 points.
For the Hawks, it marked their third straight Championship Women title following their victories in 2022 and 2023. It marked three straight individual championships for trio Ellie Newman, Zoe Shanahan and Jenna Teasdale.
