U12, U14, U16 & U18 WABL DIV 1 GRADING CANCELLED THIS WEEKEND. U20 TO PROGRESS WITH MODIFIED FIXTURE.
In response to the extreme heat forecast, Basketball WA has announced the cancellation of the Western Australian Basketball League (WABL) Division 1 Grading for the Under 12’s, Under 14’s, Under 16’s and Under 18’s divisions this weekend. The U20 games will proceed, albeit with a modified schedule. The decision, made from guidance of Sports Medicine Australia, prioritises the health and safety of athletes during these adverse weather conditions.
KEY POINTS:
1. Event Cancellation: The scheduled Division 1 WABL Grading for U12s, U14s, U16s and U18s for this weekend has been cancelled due to predicted extreme heat conditions at all venues.
2. U20s to Continue: The U20 games will proceed with a modified schedule, and new game times will be set for Sunday to ensure player safety per the Basketball WA Heat Policy and Sports Medicine Australia guidance.
3. Modified Game Regulations: The U20 games will feature modified game durations and altered regulations to mitigate any risk.
4. Health and Safety Priority: The well-being of participants the central concern, prompting Basketball WA to seek guidance from Sports Medicine Australia to ensure the games are safe.
Basketball WA emphasises that while some games might have been playable on Saturday, the compromised grading process would fail to meet the required standards due to what would have been partial play. Ensuring a fair evaluation of teams’ capabilities and available officials remains a guiding principle for WABL Grading sessions.
Basketball WA will provide Associations with further updates on WABL Grading as they work closely with clubs to communicate changes in fixtures and additional safety precautions.
