WSBL Division 1 Grand Final Preview

The two best teams from the 2018 WSBL Division 1 regular season will square off this Sunday at the Bendat Basketball Centre, which spectators will be able to witness for free. We caught up with representatives from each of the team’s to get their take on the year, opponents and this Sunday’s game, which is sure to be tightly contested.

PERRY LAKES HAWKS

Regular season record 11-2, 1stoverall

Past 5 games: W W W W W

Players to watch: Maddison Hooper, Bella Green

WABL: How has your Association approached SBL Division 1 this year?

Perry Lakes WSBL D1 Head Coach, Blair Kearsley: Our WSBL program sees Division 1 as a key component to developing our young talent as well as giving our bench players a chance to play significant minutes in leadership roles that help to build the culture of our program. The goal is always to be successful but the opportunity to develop the next wave of Hawks players is vital in maintaining the standards within our group for the future.

WABL: Thoughts on your opposition and the last time you played?

BK: We played Lakeside in the second game of the season and both teams had a few players out. It was a game of momentum – they had it early and built a big lead in the first quarter. We took control of that momentum in the second and third quarters which set up a tight last quarter. The lead went back and forth until two late 3 pointers was enough to get them over the line by 5 points.

WABL: What will be your team’s keys to winning the game?

BK: Keys to the game are certainly handling their pressure in the full court and containing dribble penetration so that we can limit their outside looks. Defence for us is a staple to our game plan. We are not the highest scoring team but pride ourselves on getting stops to facilitate our offense. For a long time, Lakeside have been known for their ability to shoot the three and once they are on they are difficult to stop so our ability to execute in offense and play good solid defence is our focus going into the Grand Final.

LAKESIDE LIGHTNING

Regular season record 10-3, 2ndoverall

Past 5 games: W W W W W

Players to watch: Paris Duffield, Claire Jacobs

WABL: How has your Association approached SBL Division 1 this year?

Lakeside WSBL Head Coach, Craig Mansfield: Division 1 is an important part of the WSBL program at our Club.  The primary purpose is for the development of players and coaches; however, we do sharpen our focus and prioritise winning games in the finals.

WABL: Thoughts on your opposition and the last time you played?

CM: Our only previous encounter was very early in the season and both teams had a couple of players unavailable.  We did build an early lead that game and just held on to win, but it means very little now, and Hawks have been in the last few grand finals, so we expect them to be tough opposition.

WABL: What will be your team’s keys to winning the game?

CM: It should be an exciting game and interesting to watch, both teams plays with good intensity.  The Hawks Division 1 team plays high scoring basketball as well, so both teams will be attacking.  A big key for us will be rebounding the basketball, they have some girls who are very physical going to the glass, if we can draw even in this area it’ll help us significantly on the scoreboard.
